Here is a quick-start guide to using this book so you can upgrade your training and see results fast.

Step 1: Select a Drill

Drills are organized into two sections, technique and strength. Select what you’d like to focus on and navigate to that section of the book (see the table of contents for details).

Before completing the drill, review the introduction paragraph to understand the purpose of the drill. Based on that purpose, evaluate whether or not that is what you want to accomplish in your climbing session.

Step 2: Identify Routes for the Drill

Follow the route selection steps to identify what route you’ll complete the drill on. This section provides recommendations for how many routes to complete the drill on and at what grade you should strive to get the most out of the drill.

Step 3: Complete the drill

Now you’re ready to complete the route with the modifications recommended for the drill based on the instruction section. A lot of times you’ll be “forcing” movement for the sake of the drill that may not be natural or intended for the route.

Remember: It is more important to complete the drill than it is to complete the route.

Challenge Ratings
Every drill has an estimated difficulty level, which is determined by both the skill targeted and the physical strength required. However, the route you choose significantly impacts the drill’s challenge. You can make the drill easier or harder by selecting different routes.

Adjusting Difficulty
Some drills offer suggestions for modifying their difficulty. While your execution will naturally affect how challenging the drill is, the route you choose is also a key factor. Keep this in mind when deciding which version of the drill to attempt.

Combine Drills
Once you’re comfortable with individual drills, consider combining them to mimic more complex climbing scenarios. This will help you apply what you’ve learned in a more practical context.

Step 4: Track and Revise Your Approach

Complete a self-evaluation based on your experience completing the drill. You can track the grade you complete the route on and the difficulty with the drill tracker at the back of the book.

Consider adding the drill to your regular climbing sessions or select another drill that may suit your needs.
